The most famous sentence in American history is also the most misquoted, because it is almost never finished. "All men are created equal" is only half of it. The claim rests on the next words: "endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights." This episode shows why that grounding is not decoration but the load-bearing wall of the whole argument.
